Fantastic for Mario fans
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My 8 year old son is so impressed by the new Super Mario Starter course as am I!
He loves that he could download and app to his iPad to give him instructions for each stage of the build.
He did not ask for help at all during the build (which he thoroughly enjoyed) which was great.
Mario requires 2AAA batteries as he interacts with some of the bricks similar to the Super Mario console games. He’s really great fun and my son absolutely love’s how he interacts during play.
It’s a fantastic set and would make a great gift for any Mario fan dare I say young or old!

Awesome set!
Great set! I bought this because I love legos, and Mario, and video games, and this is all three in one! You can see my unboxing, build, review, and play video with my brother at BCStrike Productions on Youtube. Or AC Cool Collecting on Youtube. All in all, I think it is a great set and would highly recommend, and I think the pricing is great compared to how most set series, or toy series, the main one(toy, set) you need have to interact with all the others is always the most expensive but this is cheaper than two of the big expansion sets. All round great set, love it, would totally recommend!!

Love it
My son loves it, he wants all the expansion sets, he is obsessed with Mario, this set and all of them, we do love using the app and I like it better than the paper instructions cause you can see the instructions in 3D, you can zoom at whatever you are building and turn it the way you want to see any angle, so it’s way easier and more fun to see the videos of everything you can do with the set, I think you could have explained better how to play it. That Mario gets 60 seconds when he comes out of the pipe to go thru the entire course and get coins. And that it works the same way for every expansion course.

Clever, fun and lots of replay-ability!!
We’re all big Mario and Lego fans in this house, so I purchased this on the day pre-orders were announced. When it finally arrived, we were not disappointed. Myself and my children (7 and 4) carefully put the set together and they had lots of fun just playing with Mario on his own too. After building the set fairly quickly, the children have been playing with it regularly... adapting their courses and routes with some of the add-ins and mini figures. The build quality of Bowser Jr is terrific, and is the spinning platforms, starter pipe and the little Goomba that came with the set. Worth also mentioning that it works seamlessly with the app, so you can upload courses, view other creations and see all of your sets in one place. A great start to Mario in Lego! Thank you.

Printed instructions please!
Oh how I hate it when Lego can't be bothered to include a printed instruction book showing how to build a set. This harks back to the days of Lego Dimensions when we had the same problem, no printed instructions and instead you have to read them online. What if you want to build this and you don't have Internet access where you are? What if you just prefer having an instruction booklet on the table next to you? Why not give the option of a printed instruction book and online instructions as well, like you do with the majority of sets you produce? On this basis I won't be buying as many Lego Mario sets as I might otherwise have done.

worst set ever, no paper instructions
worst set ever, zero paper instructions. One is obliged to waste precious time to go, try to find online the instructions, download them... It's a MAZE just to try to find the instructions online before one can actually build the set. It's like: you buy a game, but the game does not come with the instructions or the rules. You need to go and find the rules online by yourself... After a while, you got fed up and can't be bothered to waste your precious time, you throw it all n the bin and never buy rubbish from that toy company ever again, even if your children like it. You just introduce your children to other toy companies. What a stupid set.

Cool, but some let downs
My biggest peeve is that there are no paper instructions?!?! I don't want yet another reason for anyone to be looking at phones and tablets. And for my younger one, he just does better with paper instructions. For the price you pay, it's terrible to not include paper instructions. Also annoying when batteries are not included, but that's less of an annoyance. Please include paper instructions with future sets. Also, we have to update our lego. I'm so tired of updates on everything all the time, and now my kids toys need updates before they play.
In the end I would have preferred just a normal set with a normal sized Mario minifig without all the electronics involved.

Where's Luigi?
First off, let me say these sets are wonderful and I love the Super Mario theme.
Now to criticize a few aspects of the sets. My first criticism (as the title suggests) is the absence of Luigi (who is habitually the neglected Super Mario character) and Princess Toadstool. Hopefully more sets will be released in the future including these characters.
A second issue is the fact that the sets rely on app based building instruction rather than instruction manuals. Perhaps I prefer the printed manual because I'm an older Lego collector, but to me it is much easier to reference back if you happen to miss a piece. Also, without clear instructions, I feel like I've had to figure out the ins and outs of the game on my own.
Finally, since the set is designed so the user can create customized Super Mario levels it comes apart easily. Too easily. I know we want to move the sections around, but I've had trouble with not having enough room for the plates to lock the segments together.
All that being said, the Super Mario sets are cool and I hope Lego will extend this idea to other classic Nintendo-owned games like Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong, and Metroid.
